Professional Statement

After a career in technology, Dr. Jacob Spencer (PSY27901) studied psychology with a desire to connect with people and assist in their healing. Dr. Spencer received his doctorate and master's degrees from Pacifica Graduate Institute and studied philosophy at the University of Iowa. He has been privileged to help patients work through depression, anxiety, OCD, trauma, and addictions, among other issues. His work experience is diverse, from assisting troubled youth in elementary and high school, treating at-risk populations of all ages in community mental health clinics in Carson City, NV and Victoria, BC, to leading a team of psychiatrists, psychologists, and nursing staff at an inpatient crisis treatment facility in a maximum-security prison. Dr. Spencer assists his patients using an integrative approach that combines elements of humanistic, relational, depth, solution-focused, narrative, cognitive, and psychodynamic perspectives in the best manner for each unique patient. He believes strongly that therapy is a collaborative process to empower patients and he recognizes that seeking help is a critical and optimistic first step in the healing process.
